SUMMARY:The Dawn is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of The Dawn is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life (2024\, dir. Persis Karim and Soumyaa Behrens\, 55 min.)\, followed by a conversation and Q&A session with the co-director\, Persis Karim! This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout the film: The Dawn is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life poetically narrates the story of a community of Iranian Americans who have made the San Francisco Bay Area their home over the past five decades. The film seeks to expand our understanding of Iranian immigration — what it means to leave home and country\, and to live through the episodes of turbulent histories of dissent\, revolution\, war\, and separation — and reinvent oneself in a new place\, country\, and culture. \nThe Dawn is Too Far does not paint a story of salvation and happy assimilation but rather seeks to identify the complex ways that members of the Bay Area’s Iranian diaspora community have navigated the challenges and traumas of history to reinvent themselves and tell their own stories. \nThese as yet untold stories build on a longer history of Iranian immigration to Northern California\, where Iranians as students\, activists\, artists\, draw on as well as influence the larger culture of the Bay Area. This community\, and all that it has faced\, offers a more nuanced story of the Iranian diaspora\, the ways that this community enriches and enlivens the region where they live\, work\, and build families and community. The Dawn is Too Far undermines the tired and overplayed news headlines that are dominated by narratives of enmity and mistrust between the government of Iran and the U.S. to offer a more humane understanding of how people’s lives and the sacrifices they make are part of the larger story of immigration. \nAbout the speaker: Persis Karim is the director of the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies at San Francisco State University\, where she also teaches in the Department of Humanities and Comparative and World Literature. \nShe is the editor of three anthologies of Iranian diaspora literature and has published numerous articles about Iranian diaspora literature and culture for academic journals\, as well as poetry and essays in non-academic publications. \nThe Dawn is Too Far is her first film and reflects her interest in documenting and sharing the larger history and personal stories of those who are part of the global Iranian diaspora.

Their concert\, An Evening with the Onde Trio\, showcased their dynamic interpretations and heartfelt connection to their music. SUMMARY:Ecosystem Based Living: Wild & Regenerative Food & Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Join Maria Finn\, author of the cookbook\, Forage. Gather. Feast. and founder of The Institute for Ecosystem Based Living\, and Lydia Wendt\, founder of California Cloth Foundry\, for a discussion on ways we can hack our daily habits in food and fashion to live in more alignment with the natural world. \nFrom keystone species like salmon and oysters to the fantastic world of mushrooms and their mycelial networks\, to super carbon sequesters like seaweed\, these creatures\, fungi and algae are vital parts of their ecosystems. They are also delicious. There are so many ways we can support wild foods\, and emerging systems of regenerative foods with small\, everyday changes that will also benefit our own health and happiness. \nWhile sustainability in food has received a lot of attention\, sustainable clothing is an emerging field. Mass produced\, “fast fashion” is considered an environmental disaster and the second most polluting industry after oil. There’s a huge amount of waste of cheap clothing that often ends up in landfills – where the chemicals used for dying leach into groundwater. But fashion can be sustainable – from the farming and ranching of cotton and wool to natural dyes\, and compostable fabrics. There are many simple ways to make your fashion choices better for the planet and for your body. \nRegenerative wool and cotton samples from Lydia’s collection will be displayed and there will be bites from Maria’s cookbook\, Forage. Gather. Feast. Maria will be available to sign books after the presentation. \nPresenters: \nMaria Finn is an author and chef and founder of Flora & Fungi Adventures\, The Institute for Ecosystem Based Living and author of the newly published cookbook\, Forage. Gather. Feast. The theme that runs through them all her endeavors is how nature can teach us to become a keystone species on planet earth. \nLydia Wendt is founder of California Cloth Foundry. Their collection produces clothing\, from seed to assembly\, within a few hundred miles of its headquarters. Their fabrics made from regeneratively grown materials use eggshells instead of heavy metals\, natural enzymes instead of Formaldehyde\, and dyes made from madder root\, weld\, and chestnut instead of petroleum derivatives.

SUMMARY:Chip Conley: "Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better With Age"
DESCRIPTION:Artist Lecture With Chip Conley. \nChip Conley is a man on a mission. The long-time hospitality industry disruptor and New York Times bestselling author believes the world needs a “pro-aging” message based upon Yale’s Becca’s Levy’s research which shows that when someone shifts their mindset about aging from negative to positive\, they gain 7.5 years of additional life. \nChip created MEA (Modern Elder Academy) with a beachfront campus in Baja six years ago and a 2\,600-acre ranch campus opening in Santa Fe\, NM in spring 2024. His latest TED talk\, “An Alternative to the Midlife Crisis\,” is an insightful\, brief hint at the topic of his newest book\, “Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better With Age.” \nIn Chip’s talk\, he will focus on MEA’s core curriculum: navigating transitions\, cultivating purpose\, owning one’s wisdom\, and reframing our relationship with aging by being “age-fluid.” \nPresented in conjunction with Sausalito Village\, Books by the Bay and Marin Village
